Mulan, also known as Ziyi, Mubiu, and Wangchunhua, is a plant that vanished from this world nearly a century ago. Her father showed her a lithograph he had treasured for many years. White blossoms, each as large as a bowl, opened quietly beneath the clear sky, their delicate stamens releasing a sweet fragrance. He carefully pressed the little metal bead beneath the picture. A faint, delicate scent wafted toward her. “That is the flower’s fragrance. When the magnolia blooms, its scent carries for miles.” Her father had told her that the scent trapped in the picture had been used so many times that fewer than ten whiffs remained. I love her story, but I’ve never been satisfied with the versions passed down through the years, so I decided to write my own.
