A stoic, restrained poor boy × a flirtatious, straightforward, highly educated woman
After his family is hit by sudden disaster, Jiang Chuan takes on the burden of holding their shattered household together at just twenty years old. He supports four elderly relatives and puts his younger sister through school.
He isn't well educated and lives hand to mouth. Responsibility is all he can see. After years of struggling to get by, he never dares let himself get distracted by anything else, especially not Ji Youning, the bright, elegant woman who seems to announce from head to toe, "You're out of my league."
-
Ji Youning is used to polished, self-interested men who seem to have rolled off an assembly line, but Jiang Chuan is different.
He's quiet and rough around the edges, like a blunt knife hacking through brambles.
At first, she's merely curious and decides to have a little fun with him. Unfortunately, Jiang Chuan doesn't fall for her tricks at all. He even pushes her away without hesitation.
Once the novelty wears off, Ji Youning plans to put that silly whim behind her.
But when trouble strikes and she can't handle it in time, the people who used to swarm around her and curry her favor disappear. The only one who stands in front of her without a word is the man she'd toyed with.
As it turns out, Jiang Chuan does have feelings for her.
-
After Jiang Chuan rejects her with righteous conviction for the third time, Ji Youning blocks his way. Her fingertips brush the solid arm beneath his worn T-shirt as she looks into his restrained eyes. "Jiang Chuan, you say we're from different worlds. What if I insist on stepping into yours?"
His jaw tightens, and his voice turns hoarse. "Ji Youning, I can't provide for you. My world has nothing in it."
Ji Youning suddenly smiles and leans close to his ear, her breath warm. "Who said I need you to provide for me? I'll bring my own provisions. Can't I help you support your family? Besides, who says your world has nothing in it? Once I step into it, it'll have me."
