Xia Ranran accidentally finds an ancient book sealed inside a jade box.
The book, Miscellaneous Records of the Southern Dynasties, describes a fantastical ancient world.
Powerful clans rule, and in this chaotic age, ordinary people are as expendable as grass. Those who die unjustly or starve to death become resentful spirits that bring harm to the world.
The story's central dark cultivator, Zhong Yanli, is described as a scion of a prestigious clan. He seems like a refined young noble, but in truth he is eccentric, unhinged, and skilled at deception. He uses the living to practice forbidden arts.
Later, he takes on the entire cultivation world of the Southern Dynasties by himself.
By chance, Xia Ranran discovers that she can travel back and forth between two worlds.
Every time she crosses over, she seems to encounter the book's great villain, Zhong Yanli. She uncovers a secret about him: he may not be human!
So she decides to make him the subject of a research project and observe him up close.
