In late autumn, Aris saw Su drag an injured person back home. Her hands were covered in dark red blood.

For a while, Aris thought Su would kill him. But the longer they spent together, the more he felt that he meant nothing to her.

He meant nothing to Su. She was only keeping a promise she'd made to someone else.

Still, Aris waited for her, perhaps to confirm once more what he meant to her, or perhaps to finally give up hope.

When he was twenty-four, a plague swept through the land. Aris lay on his bed, barely alive, his consciousness fading. He thought he saw Su, but believed she was just a hallucination brought on by his impending death.
