In the year 4050, humanity glimpsed a little hope in its most desperate era: the genes of a few plants and animals had been restored. But beneath that light lurked enormous threats: giant creatures on land, vicious fish in the sea, and a new species, merfolk. Known as nature's agents of judgment, merfolk hunted humans.
Shen Lan found a merfolk infant on the surface. He didn't turn it in to headquarters. He planned to raise it himself and observe how merfolk developed. Little did he know that the merfolk baby he'd picked up was a leader among its kind, and he was feeding it like an idiot.
When Shen Lan was away, the merfolk baby would climb out of its tank. An unfamiliar primitive fish: never seen one before, better fish it out and have a taste.
An unfamiliar primitive plant: never seen one before, better have a taste.
Then, before Shen Lan got home, it would climb back into the tank. Shen Lan would return to find the place in shambles. Had they been robbed???

[Reader's Guide]
All living creatures in this story are the author's invention.
Merfolk and humans are on opposing sides.
Merfolk can understand human speech. This is a gift of nature.
Merfolk evolved from the most primitive fish.
Merfolk fear the deep sea, yet they also come from it.
Humans live underground. The ozone layer is long gone, Antarctica has melted, and some islands have disappeared.
The underground world is divided into five regions (I explain this in the story itself, to avoid spoilers for people who skip the blurb. Don't mind me going on and on; people really do skip it.)
The ocean is black-green.
If any descriptions make you uncomfortable, decide for yourself whether to drop the story. Don't leave mindless comments. (If you skipped the blurb and started reading, okay, pretend I didn't say anything.)
Everything in this story is made up. If you insist on arguing, you're right.
