An orphan, a little girl, adopted by a notorious human trafficker.
She’s reached the age when she’s supposed to be “sent to market.”
That’s Nancy’s situation.
She went out to scavenge in the garbage heaps for food, as usual. She found nothing to eat, but she did find a black notebook.
Nancy couldn’t read, but she knew quality.
An elegant cover, smooth, pristine pages.
A fine find.
Bored and unwilling to keep doing unpaid work for some unknown being, Udia had happened to hear there was a way to hand a notebook over to a human.
Udia didn’t know people, but she knew what to look for.
Restless feet that refused to accept the status quo.
Clever eyes, full of cunning.
And, beneath a frail little body, a heart that was itching to act.
She had found her.
After setting fire to her adoptive father’s home, then to Meteor City’s own city within a city, a service establishment unknown to the Council of Elders, a girl, a god, and one grand plan were left.
More accurately, it was Nancy’s plan.
“Punish criminals?” The last person did that.
Nancy shook her head.
“Become stronger?” The obsession of the weak.
Nancy pursed her lips.
“Search for treasure?” A common ailment among people who get rich all at once.
Nancy closed her eyes, utterly uninterested.
“Then what do you want to do?”
“Do you know The Last Supper?”
The young god of death had seen plenty. She nodded and continued guessing:
“You want to become God?”
This time, Nancy laughed.
“The first time I saw that painting, I realized that gods and people, the strong and the weak, the rich and the poor, are all the same.”
“The world is one huge dining table. Not everyone gets to eat, and a table of limited size can only seat a dozen or so people.”
“I used to think being able to eat my fill was enough.”
“Now I want a seat at the table.”
“Who gets to eat their fill, who lives and who dies...”
“I’ll decide all of it.”
Aries Chain Hospital, Polar Bear Pharmaceutical Factory, Egret University, White Dove Insurance Company, Termite Food Delivery and Logistics Services, Beluga Church
A business magnate in his fifties, a local noble with a keen eye for talent, university students taking the Hunter Exam, Yorknew City’s jack-of-all-trades wage slave
Behind every single one of them was the same name.
“By the way, may I ask your name?”
“Nancy.”
“...”
“Why aren’t you writing it down? I told you my name. I even told you how to use it. If you can’t write, ask Udia to teach you.”
Chrollo could write. He just didn’t want to.
1. This is a Hunter-focused story that borrows only the setting, not the plot.
2. The heroine isn’t an agent of chaos who just wants to have fun. It may be hard to believe, but she really is lawful good.
3. There are lots of secret identities, a colorful romantic history, and she somehow manages to offend the whole world without meaning to, not just the person mentioned in the blurb.
