After three years in Beijing, He Jingshi is passed over for a promotion in favor of someone with connections. She quits on the spot: Who cares about this damn job? Let someone else do it!
She takes off her straight-laced scholar's robe and goes home to inherit the braised goose shop. He's Braised Goose is often closed: open four days, closed three.
One day, a fool with money walks in.
Gu Xi's condescending tone gets under He Jingshi's skin, and she slaps the table. "Just because you're rich, you think you can do whatever you want?"
When she hears him offer more money, her eyes light up. She knows when to bend. "How much? You tell me."
Later, as the dating-buddy trend catches on, He Jingshi, sick of being nagged to get married, sets her sights on Gu Xi.
The first time Gu Xi meets He Jingshi, she thinks he's broke and treats him to goose rice.
The second time, at the Temple of the God of Wealth, she prays devoutly for the nonsensical wish to get rich out of nowhere.
The third time, at a nursing home, she sings Cantonese opera with her fingers stiffly curled into orchid shapes.
Later, he watches this carefree girl run into all kinds of rotten situations, and somehow finds himself falling for her.
When He Jingshi asks him to marry her, Gu Xi says calmly, "I'll think about it overnight."
He Jingshi thinks she's been rejected and slinks home. What she doesn't know is that Gu Xi spends the whole night wondering why the marriage registry office isn't open at night.
