*A sickly, obsessive fox-spirit beauty x a fragile, calculating young empress
*Supernatural folklore, romantic rivals vying for her affection
Blurb:
When Xue Ling was sixteen, her betrothed broke off their engagement, and disaster struck her family.
At the end of her rope, she secretly hid in the back hills behind her home and took out the incomplete Daoist text her maternal grandmother had given her.
Summon a fox spirit and change her family's fortunes.
Halfway through the burning of the incense, the surroundings suddenly turned bitterly cold. All living creatures scattered, and a hazy, ethereal figure appeared.
The young man had a slender, bamboo-like frame and the head of a fox on a human body.
The fox spirit lowered his eyes and smiled. “If you want me to save your family, you must marry me.”
Later, the turmoil subsided. Her aunt, the Empress Dowager, instead arranged for her to marry the new emperor and become empress. The fox spirit vanished without a trace, and Xue Ling thought the matter was behind her.
Until the night of her wedding, when a jade scepter lifted her red veil. She looked up, and her face went deathly pale.
The palace lanterns swayed, casting a huge fox shadow on the wall.
The newcomer wore wedding robes. His features were as lovely as a painting, his beastlike eyes cold, and a chilling smile hung on his jade-white face.
“My bride, it's time for our wedding night.”
Reading information:
1v1, both leads have had no previous partners, happy ending
The second male lead is her childhood betrothed, a young general; the third male lead is a vicious, twisted young emperor. They all get their comeuppance, down to the ashes.
A writing exercise, indulging my personal tastes. The style is somewhat dark.
