Whenever a case involves the supernatural or defies explanation by modern science, the police automatically notify the Special Investigations Bureau to follow up, investigate, and close the case. The secrets hidden from the world are always being pursued by someone who refuses to give up.
Hu Lai, the young man with the longest record of delayed graduation in the history of the Taoist Academy, has finally joined the Special Investigations Bureau. Being able to abandon the traditional implements and talismans in favor of approved weapons and firearms is the dream of every graduate of a modern spiritual academy.
But in an age ruled by technology, the path grows harder and harder for someone who's hopeless with electronics. Little did he know that a bag of magical artifacts he happened to dig out would prove surprisingly useful. It's just a shame that the traditional exorcism trade is in decline.
It seems Heaven heard her call, because one uniquely talented teammate after another joined the team.
Survivalist puppet-master girl: As swift and agile as a black cat, she controls humanoid spirit puppets in battle. Her powerful synchronized attacks can suppress an aberrant Corpse King in one fell swoop.
Hot-blooded young shaman: He sings and dances to ancient, lilting melodies, conjuring an array of formations that multiply the team's combat efficiency.
Older-sister-type Miao witch: Her Gu techniques kill without a trace. An S-rank psychic, her instincts are terrifyingly accurate, making her a walking gallery of wanted criminals.
The team is beginning to take shape. Like a fragmented map gradually pieced back together, it will eventually reveal the most thrilling adventure of all.
Just when Hu Lai thought things would carry on like this until retirement, a signal flare suddenly burst in the silent, fathomless abyss, cold as a glacier. Red firework characters flashed by: The story begins before the beginning.
