This story is an alternate-timeline version of Flower Sea. When I was first writing Flower Sea, I considered having Yue Guan go with Tang San and the others to Sea God Island, but at the time I couldn't think of a way for Yue Guan to leave Spirit Hall safely, so I gave up on the idea. Of course, I still have no idea how Yue Guan and Gui Mei managed to slip away when Tang San was only in the sixties and Tang Hao was crippled, so we'll just ignore that question.
Before arriving at Sea God Island, Yue Guan had already been recognized by Lovesick Heartbreak Red. That made him the Flower God's chosen successor, and his divine trials had already begun behind the scenes. This put Bo Saixi in a difficult position, because the rules wouldn't allow him to test the successor of another god, but without giving Yue Guan a trial, there was no way to keep him on Sea God Island.
So in the end, Bo Saixi gave Yue Guan a trial packed with busywork: supervising Tang San as he underwent the Sea God Trial, turning Tang San into Yue Guan's little project.
And so Tang San was sold off, all the while cheerfully thanking the Sea God for his arrangements.

The sea of flowers and plants and this novel, and the description of Yueguan hit me perfectly.
