Mutual Capture

At twenty, Ruxue became wildly infatuated with an actor while watching a TV drama. After rewatching it again and again, she decided she absolutely had to have a passionate romance with this man.

When her roommate saw her new phone wallpaper, she exclaimed that Ruxue had great taste: she'd become a fan of a veteran actor with an impressive career, a spotless reputation, and plenty of charm. Maybe they could be fellow fans and follow him together. But Ruxue was silently weighing her own qualifications, wondering how she could make her way to him, step by step.

So, when the holidays arrived, Ruxue packed a bag and headed for the film studios.

When she went from her cramped little room to a corner of the set and saw the elegantly dressed leading lady arrive surrounded by a crowd, she quietly set down her boxed lunch.

“That's how a real man should be!”

She thought of what the Han emperor Gaozu had said when he saw the First Emperor on tour.

The first time Zhou Mingzhao asked her name, Ruxue said, “My name is Ruxue, from the Book of Songs: ‘The mayfly burrows out, its wings like snow-white robes. My heart is troubled; let me find my rest.’”

But inwardly she gave a wry laugh. Her parents weren't educated enough to have taken her name from the Book of Songs. It had simply happened to snow when she was born.

As expected, the award-winning actor, whose name also came from the Book of Songs, took an interest in her. They talked for a long time and exchanged contact information.

“It's a pleasure to meet you. I hope we get the chance to work together someday.”

At the time, Ruxue was only a minor actress who got a few brief appearances in TV dramas, yet hearing those words filled her with joy. She kept her face composed, though, as if praise and disgrace meant nothing to her.

Later, Ruxue rose to the top, dressed in exquisite, luxurious gowns, and was greeted by cheers and screams wherever she went.

To the envy of everyone around them, she held hands with the idol she'd admired back in school. They were a match made in heaven.

Dizzy beneath the flashbulbs, Ruxue felt that her ambition had finally made her the person she'd always wanted to become. Even Zhou Mingzhao was just as she'd once imagined: an elegant, gentle cynic, like the ocean embracing her.

But something still felt wrong. Could someone really be so much like the role they played? Could her own clumsy, inexperienced approach really have been so flawless in front of this rising star among directors, now at the height of his influence?

Zhou Mingzhao, Zhou Mingzhao, are you really as upright and virtuous as your name suggests?

Ruxue turned to look at the flawless profile beside her. Were you a gentle, tranquil ocean, or an abyss luring me to drown?
