My name is Lucy, Lucy Lefroy.
Everyone who knows me says I'm a lively, cheerful, and straightforward young woman.
But lately, I've been acting strangely. I've become hesitant, stammering, and tongue-tied, especially around my cousin's prospective fiance, Mr. Wesley. I think I've fallen for him.
Ever since I realized how I felt, I haven't been able to eat or sleep properly. I've been tormented by guilt all day long. After two gloomy days, I decided to confess everything to my cousin.
To my utter surprise, my cousin didn't want the engagement at all. She had already fallen for someone else and was planning to elope.
Before leaving, my cousin comforted me. "You don't need to blame yourself too much. It's only a passing teenage crush. You'll get over it soon. ...Besides, Mr. Wesley always does whatever it takes to get what he wants. He's not right for you. You should stay away from him as soon as you can."
I've always thought my cousin was the wisest person of our generation, and she's usually right. But this time, I felt she was biased against him.
Because to me, Mr. Wesley was so refined and courteous, and so deeply devoted to those he loved.
My cousin's elopement had broken his heart. Whenever he came to see me, he looked utterly devastated. Yet whenever I saw him like that, my own heart inexplicably beat faster.
At last, one day, Mr. Wesley had completely recovered from his heartbreak. He told me very seriously, "I've fallen for Miss Lucy, and I hope she'll marry me."
I was so excited that I told my mother, but she disapproved. Then I told my father, and he opposed it just as firmly.
Mr. Wesley was right! My cousin had dared to elope for love, so I had to be brave too. I made up my mind: I would go with Mr. Wesley and run away with him.
I packed my bags that very night and took the fastest carriage. By the next day, I had reached our destination. As I looked at the castle he'd so carefully prepared for me, I inexplicably felt a flicker of hesitation.
But it was too late. Mr. Wesley had already taken my hand and was leading me inside, leaving no room for refusal.
Behind me, the two heavy doors slowly closed.
Mr. Wesley began acting strangely, but I couldn't escape.
