Lu Youning first met Shang Que on a bus heading to a scenic area in the city center.
He leaned against the railing, speaking into his phone in a raspy voice and criticizing the other person for doing a poor job.
Lu Youning accidentally got into an argument with someone and was clearly losing when a pair of hands pulled her off the bus. They ran all the way to a nearby alley lined with gray bricks and tiled roofs before stopping.
She said, "Thank you," and looked up at the owner of those hands.
His handsome, arrogant face wore a carefree smile, with a bewitching quality that seemed to defy the ordinary world.
The man told her his name was Shang Que, and that he lived right there.
Lu Youning’s heart started beating faster for no reason.
She gathered her courage and asked if they could be friends.
Shang Que lifted the corner of his lips, looking a little roguish.

Beneath a vast sky screen that revealed a canopy of stars, clinking crystal glasses reflected the lights, exuding sheer extravagance.
Lu Youning attended as Shang Que’s date, but once the dance began, he left her standing off to the side.
A curious friend came over to ask. Shang Que swirled the Romanee in his hand, his voice indifferent and dispassionate. "She can’t dance. What am I supposed to do?"

The next time Lu Youning saw Shang Que was after she’d decisively added him to her blacklist.
That night, dark clouds hung over the capital.
After evening study, Lu Youning left school. The instant she stepped into a convenience store by the road, she suddenly stopped.
A line of black Mercedes-Benzes with matching license numbers was parked along the street beneath the night sky.
The man leaned against one of the cars, his tall silhouette stretching through the play of light and shadow, smoke curling from his fingertips.
His gaze slowly settled on her, his voice cold. "You used me and then ran?"
"Lu Youning, where did you get the nerve?"
