Taiping is a cat living in Chang'an Prefecture.
The old scholar who took her in liked to quote books at her: "Better to be a dog in a peaceful age than a person in a time of chaos."
Taiping wasn't a dog, but the little cat had a name now.
That wasn't her only name, though. People from all walks of life on Chang'an's streets gave her all sorts of nicknames:
☆ The lively, adorable girl who sold water caltrops along the street wasn't very good with words. Whenever she saw Taiping, she called her Big Face.
☆ The kindly old woman who sold tofu always called her Little Kitty in a soft, gentle voice.
☆ The miserly shopkeeper's wife called Taiping over whenever she had mice, and shooed her away whenever she didn't.
☆ The forgetful innkeeper with a wine banner out front called Taiping Lucky one day and Money Bringer the next. Either way, it always came down to money.
☆ And, of course, the constables at the county yamen. Whenever they spotted Taiping while solving a case, they took it as a good omen. They all called her their lucky star.
