Jing Zhe was a famous figure at No. 13 High School: top of his class, arrogant and domineering, rich and handsome, a young master adored by everyone. The school forum had a thread with hundreds of replies speculating about who he would date after graduation.
But no one could have guessed that he would choose Guan Yingshi.
She was an ordinary-looking girl from an ordinary family, someone who could disappear into a crowd. She was his deskmate.
Everyone thought the two of them were mismatched, and that Jing Zhe was only interested because she was something new. Once he got bored, he would break up with her.
But no one expected Jing Zhe to be the one who got dumped.
On the day the college entrance exam results came out, Guan Yingshi blocked Jing Zhe on every platform, left without a trace, and vanished.
The last thing she said to him was, "We're not right for each other."

Years after they parted, Guan Yingshi happened to run into Jing Zhe, who was conducting an archaeological dig nearby while her research group was on a field study.
He had blond hair and platinum earrings, and looked more like a rebel than a student. He was as flamboyant as ever. Introduced by their professor, he greeted her coolly: "Hello, Guan."
Guan Yingshi turned away without a word.
The teachers from their two fields hit it off and chatted away. As luck would have it, they were staying at the same hotel, so they kept running into each other.
The two who couldn't stand each other were forced to sit at the same table for meals.
They traded barbs and exchanged glares across the table. They glared at each other so often that even their fellow students noticed something was off.
After one meal, a junior student hesitated, then whispered to Guan Yingshi, "Senior, did you offend that handsome senior from the other group? He keeps looking at you."
"I don't know. Maybe he's secretly in love with me."
Guan Yingshi spoke at just the right volume for Jing Zhe to hear.
They passed each other on a deserted landing of the stairs, one going up and the other down.
Jing Zhe gave a scoffing laugh. "You don't actually think I've been devoted to you all these years, do you?"
Guan Yingshi looked at him coldly. "When were you ever devoted to me?"

Guan Yingshi assumed that Jing Zhe resented her for dumping him when he was the golden boy, and that he was making things difficult for her at every turn because he still couldn't let it go after all these years.
She thought he was simply another trial she had to endure.
Until one day, an earthquake struck without warning. As Guan Yingshi scrambled to get to safety, she accidentally triggered the emergency call on her phone. The call went to Jing Zhe.
That night, someone knocked on the door of Guan Yingshi's room.
Jing Zhe, who had always looked at her coldly, was now in a pitiful state. His eyes red, he pulled her into his arms.
