Background Character A is an unlucky wage slave. After ten years of gig work with irregular hours, long days, and rough conditions, he finally came to his senses one day and realized he couldn't go on like this. He'd have no pension when he got old.
A quick calculation told him he was sure to pass the civil service exam.
So Background Character A started preparing for it. First, he needed to find a job with little work, good pay, and great benefits, so he could have plenty of time to study.
Agent Xiao Wang was reliable. He took Background Character A to a castle famous throughout the region. "This place is perfect for you. There's hardly any work, and you'll be far from office politics. The pay and benefits aren't great, but you've been out of school for ten years and still don't have any work experience... You know how it is."
The castle looked gloomy, like something out of an infinite-horror story, but Xiao Wang really hadn't lied. Aside from being seven thousand kilometers from Huaguo, which made visiting family a little inconvenient, the occasional ugly-looking ghosts, the chandeliers, pipes, doors, and windows that would suddenly break, and the wolves howling at night, it really was a low-effort job. Perfect for studying.
But one day, seven people came to explore the place, and things got less pleasant. Their noisy arguing and screaming made it impossible for Background Character A to memorize his books.
Later, the police even showed up and put up warning tape.
Worried this would disqualify him during the background check, Background Character A had no choice but to quit and call Agent Xiao Wang to find him another job.
The new job was great too.
It was just busy, and Background Character A worried people would interrupt his studies.
Xiao Wang reassured him. "Don't worry, they're all good about following school rules. You just watch the gate. You don't need to worry about what happens inside. There are security guards and teachers."
Background Character A found that nobody actually wanted to leave the school, so he could keep studying in peace.
But one day, seven transfer students arrived. They made a racket, caused a commotion, and set off explosives that blew up the school.
With no gate left to guard, Background Character A had no choice but to find Agent Xiao Wang again.
Xiao Wang looked a little exasperated. "No wonder you don't have any work experience. The companies you've worked for have all gone under."
That's what he said, but it wasn't Background Character A who had caused the clients to go under. Kindhearted Xiao Wang still found him yet another good job: a ticket inspector on a subway train.
Xiao Wang said, "When passengers without tickets pass by, the scanner will beep. Once the transit police catch them, they'll call you over to make them pay the fare."
This job was just as quiet as the last one. Nobody dodged the fare, so Background Character A could study in peace.
But one day, seven passengers came along. They kept jumping from car to car, refused to buy tickets, and screamed so loudly that Background Character A couldn't get any peace.
Background Character A had no choice. He kindly helped the transit police catch the seven fare evaders and even kindly paid their fares for them.
Then someone reported him.
The transit police did.
Xiao Wang found him ahead of time. "I think gig work is great. Why bother signing a contract with clients? They're all demanding, and your coworkers are all scheming."
Background Character A looked at the furious manager in the distance and thought Xiao Wang was right. He'd been friendly and cooperative, and had even paid for their tickets out of his own wages. Why was he being fired? Maybe this was just how dark the workplace was.
After saying goodbye to Xiao Wang, Background Character A went back to his old line of work.
He didn't expect to get a job the next day, or to run into Xiao Wang there.
Agent Xiao Wang looked shocked. "You're a Taoist priest? And you still want to take the civil service exam?"
As he calmly drew a talisman and collected a ghost, Background Character A answered Xiao Wang, "That's a prejudice."
He'd carefully read the exam announcement. It never said Taoist priests couldn't apply.
Xiao Wang tried to stop Background Character A. "Hey, hey, that's my client! Could you at least wait until it pays the agency fee before you exorcise it?"
The Ghost King awoke. To replenish the power lost during its long slumber, it created countless haunted domains, absorbing the vital energy of humans who wandered into them.
The more realistic and intricate a haunted domain was, the more efficiently it could use that energy. So the Ghost King hired large numbers of ghosts, offering excellent pay and benefits.
Xiao Wang was a ghost agent. He specialized in finding jobs for ghosts, earning agency fees and commissions. With his good conscience and after-sales service, he was thriving in the ghost world.
Until he met Background Character A.
Not only did he nearly ruin Xiao Wang's reputation, he almost exorcised Xiao Wang himself.
Xiao Wang: "I've told you already. Taoist priests shouldn't get involved in ghost business!"
Background Character A, now that he understood what had been going on: "No wonder business has picked up."
