He held his gun steady. "Take off your jacket."
"I'm not armed." James sighed and obediently stood up. He set down his glass at a pace that wouldn't cause any unnecessary misunderstandings, then took off his suit jacket and placed it beside him. He raised his hands to let the other man inspect his empty holster. "With all due respect, you're being a little too cautious. Satisfied now?"
"I learned from the best."
"I don't remember teaching you to point a gun at everyone."
"That clearly doesn't apply to you." The young man stopped two steps away. "After all, the last time '007' broke into my apartment, he opened fire the moment he saw me..."
"...The bullet only wounded your leg." The culprit interrupted in time to make a slight correction to the story.
"...Then you stole the files I was carrying. I got a concussion when I fell down the stairs, was suspended for two months pending an investigation, and the entire MI6 thought I was your accomplice in defecting."
"And as it turned out, all of that was a misunderstanding. I thought you'd be the one person who trusted me most, darling Carlo."
Both men were disgusted by the overly intimate endearment.
"Were you there yesterday?"
A faintly amused, almost-smiling expression appeared on the man's face. "If you'd died last night, I would have gone in and finished the job you left undone."
"Congratulations on being promoted to the 00 Section, Carroll Lake. What should I call you now, 006?"
