Yu Sangchu shares a name with a supporting female character in a novel, so her roommate orders her to read the whole thing and memorize the key plot points.
Yu Sangchu is too busy working to find the time. In the end, she collapses after staying up all night, and when she opens her eyes, she's in ancient times. Worse, she's become that very supporting character.
The character is infatuated with the second male lead and uses her family, a loyal and distinguished general's household, to petition the emperor for a marriage decree.
But the second male lead loves someone else. After their wedding, he treats her coldly and refuses to share her bed. She clings to him anyway, becoming a laughingstock in the marquis's household and throughout the capital.
Then, one wrong move gets the marquis's household implicated in a succession struggle. They are dispossessed and exiled, and the second male lead's fate is unknown. The supporting character remains devoted to him, enduring the journey north to the frontier and caring for her elders while raising her younger siblings.
Later, the second male lead fights his way back into court and brings his family home to the capital, but all he says to her is, "Thank you."
Afterward, he goes to the frontier and remains faithful to the female lead for the rest of his life, while the supporting character dies alone, still his wife in name only.
After recalling the few plot points she knew, Yu Sangchu opens her eyes to find herself already on the road to exile. She nearly chokes on the shock.
To avoid an ending where she gets nothing for all her effort, Yu Sangchu writes a divorce agreement as soon as they settle down.
