"They say our village has prospered for a hundred years: its people are numerous, its descendants successful in their careers, and its elders live long, healthy lives. It is all thanks to a god who is kind and benevolent, and protects everyone in the village."
"But I alone know that this kind and benevolent god is nothing but a lie. A terrible secret lies hidden in this village."
Zhang Monan was terminally ill, destitute, and nearing the end of her life. In her final days, she could no longer afford rent, so she had no choice but to return to her hometown, Fushou Village, and wait to die.
Seeing how hard her life had been, an elderly villager quietly told her a secret: Go pray at the temple at the foot of the mountain. The god enshrined there was mighty, protecting the village and granting the heartfelt wishes of every devoted resident of Fushou Village.
With nowhere else to turn, Zhang Monan figured she might as well try superstition. She entered the temple, which was ancient and long since fallen into disrepair. At the center of the main hall stood a statue of a white-haired old man. He looked kind and benevolent, with a warm smile. Zhang Monan felt an instant fondness for him, bowed to him again and again, and prayed for good health. She didn't want to die.
But after night fell, a handsome young man with long hair, eyes black as jade, and pale skin sat at the foot of her bed. His smile never reached his eyes, raising goosebumps all over her.
"I heard your prayer."
"But what price will you pay me in return?"
