The term "occultist" broadly refers to Confucian scholars who interpret omens, Taoist priests, alchemists, wandering fortune-tellers, and practitioners of magic. All occultists study the occult arts, an umbrella term for technical arts and divination.
A year ago, while Zhang Xiuyi, a disciple of Taishu Palace on Mount Qiyun, was conducting a grand ritual on the Ghost Festival to deliver the souls of the dead, the altar was suddenly invaded by a group of unknown occultists. The ritual was forced to stop, and the ghosts who had come to be guided to the afterlife scattered in every direction. The head of Taishu Palace died as a result. Before passing away, he instructed Zhang Xiuyi to succeed him as head, keep his death secret, and find Daoist Mei Qian's son, Mei Wenhua. Only then would they learn who the occultists were. Zhang Xiuyi obeyed his master's final orders and set out to find Mei Wenhua.
