Math teacher vs. Chinese teacher
The rain fell in a light, scattered drizzle.
"You're teaching Class 1, Grade 10. Teacher Zhang is taking about two months off, so you'll fill in and teach math," the grade director said, folding up his umbrella.
Chen Linhai nodded. He pointed to the teacher at the lectern inside the classroom and asked, "Is he a new teacher? He looks so young."
"I don't think so. Xiao Zhou's been teaching here for a year. I'm sure you two will get along well as colleagues."
Chen Linhai didn't answer.
The bell rang.
Zhou Wanfeng brushed the chalk dust from his hands, gathered his textbooks, and walked out of the classroom with his head lowered. The grade director and Chen Linhai were standing right outside.
"Xiao Zhou, this is the new substitute teacher from out of town. You two should get to know each other."
Zhou Wanfeng raised his head. His dark eyes held a tenderness he couldn't hide. "Hello, I'm Zhou Wanfeng. I teach Chinese. I may not be able to help you much in your day-to-day work."
Chen Linhai held out his hand. "Hello, Teacher Zhou. I'm Chen Linhai. I guess we're temporary colleagues now."
Zhou Wanfeng smiled and shook his hand.
The sudden rain fell hard, and it lasted a long time.
Chaoxin was a tiny town, and Chaoxin School was tiny too, but the world outside was vast.
I'll take you out to see it someday.
Sounds good.
It's been almost two years since you came back. I thought you weren't coming back.
I promised you.
You still remember?
Yes, Teacher Zhou. From now on, we'll be colleagues.
The mountain breeze blew gently through the woods, drying the rain and welcoming the sunny skies.
