A new novel is now underway: The Little Husband of the Young Scholar. If you're interested, please add it to your favorites!
Li Chuanshan of Taoli Village died, leaving behind Xia Shuyao, the young man who was engaged to become his second husband, and his twelve-year-old son, Li Youning.
When Xia Shuyao was ten, his little father died. His already difficult life became even harder when he lost the only person who had ever protected him. Less than three months later, his father married a stepmother, and Xia Shuyao's life grew even more miserable.
When Xia Shuyao was thirteen, his father sold him to a trafficker for three taels of silver. The trafficker thought he was pretty and wanted to sell him to a brothel. Xia Shuyao tried to escape but failed and was beaten unconscious. When he woke up, he discovered someone had bought him.
When Xia Shuyao was fifteen, that person died too, leaving only him and the son he had left behind in the household.
Li Youning's little father died in childbirth. His father raised him alone until he was ten, then bought a young male spouse and told Li Youning the young man was there to look after him. To outsiders, he called him his second husband, explaining that he was too young for them to marry for another couple of years.
Li Youning and the young man lived together peacefully for two years. They barely spoke and knew little about each other. Then his father suddenly died, and the two were forced to depend on each other.
Li Youning had a natural gift for studying and passed the county-level imperial examination at ten. If not for his father's misfortune, he would have taken the next exam to become a licentiate. Now he had to observe mourning for three years before he could sit for it.
After Li Chuanshan died, the family had no income, so Xia Shuyao had to shoulder the burden of supporting them. Li Youning would continue studying once he was eligible to take the exams, and that would require a great deal of money.
Drawing on what his little father had taught him, Xia Shuyao started a business. The household soon had an income, and the business grew bigger and bigger. Xia Shuyao also got to see many of the things his little father had told him about.
After observing mourning for three years, Li Youning worked his way up from licentiate to top scholar. At first, he studied hard because he didn't want to let either of his fathers down. Later, he also wanted to let Yao'er do what he wished.
