1. Yan Qingzhi is proudest of her stunning face. Though she's still young, she's already known throughout the provincial capital as a great beauty. The young men who admire her and want to marry her could circle the city.
While her family fretted over the son of a senior official and the younger brother of the steel mill director fighting over her, Yan Qingzhi acted as if nothing had happened and went to bed after lighting incense, just as usual.
It's time for my beauty sleep, and I'm not missing it!
But that day, she seemed to sleep for far too long. When Yan Qingzhi woke up, she still thought she was dreaming.
Through the window, she saw vast stretches of farmland and mountains. The bustle of the metropolis was gone, along with the dance halls and shopping centers she knew. Only two children, around the same age and with familiar-looking features, were leaning over the bed and staring at her.
"..."
What the heck?
She merely furrowed her brows, and the boy standing a little farther away immediately tensed up and lowered his head, stiff and afraid. But the little girl snuggled up close on the other side grinned at her and shouted in a loud voice:
"Mom!"
Yan Qingzhi was so startled that she knocked the calendar off the bedside table.
September 16, 1976
Yan Qingzhi: "!!!"
She clearly remembered that it had just been New Year's when she went to bed. By her count, it was only 1972!
Was this world going crazy?!!
In her extreme shock, Yan Qingzhi didn't notice the little girl stubbornly huddled in her arms. It was only when she looked down at the small mirror in her hand that she let out a scream loud enough to shake the heavens.
Who could tell her who the puffy-faced, haggard woman in the mirror was?!!!
Why was her skin so terrible?!!!
2.
After taking time off to bring Yan Qingzhi and the two children to the provincial capital for a series of examinations, Huo Heng was finally able to confirm that his wife had really lost her memory, and that it might be permanent.
That was awkward. He'd just filed the divorce papers.
With his daughter clinging to him, Huo Heng rose in the quiet room to heat some milk. After a long pause, he finally spoke.
"Is there anything you want to ask?"
Yan Qingzhi waited a couple of seconds before looking up. She watched him skillfully settle the two children who kept climbing on him, then pour the freshly heated milk into their bottles, one after the other.
He moved with practiced ease and showed no sign of struggling.
The faint smell of milk drifted through the cramped space. Toys of every kind filled the room wherever she looked.
A hassle, but rich and in good shape.
Yan Qingzhi looked away and hesitantly asked her first question of the day.
"Do we have any milk left at home?"
She looked so dark now. It was time to make a change!
Huo Heng, whose steady hands were famous, spilled the hot milk on the table for the first time in his life.
"...That's all you wanted to ask?"
"Mm." Yan Qingzhi nodded, then pressed her lips together slightly and spoke in a tiny voice. "Also, aren't I your wife? Why couldn't I find the bankbooks at home?"
Their eyes met. Yan Qingzhi lowered her gaze, looking shy and ill at ease.
Huo Heng was silent for a moment, then opened a compartment in the cabinet and handed her several bankbooks, along with their PINs. Then he turned to wash his hands, stumbling over his words as he remembered he needed to wash another cup.
The room fell silent again.
Sitting beside the tall bed, Yan Qingzhi swung her slender legs and opened the bankbooks. She let out a brief sigh of relief.
On the seventh day after waking up, she had money in her hands. Check.
She happily flipped through the bankbooks and their PINs, unaware that someone in the room was washing a cup and letting out a long sigh of relief too.
