Synopsis:
Wen Jingzhi is a disposable passerby in a whole host of supernatural films, serving only to move the plot along.
At first, all the protagonists and supporting characters who enter these supernatural movies think so too. But as the plots unfold, things start to take a strange turn.
Wait, wasn't he supposed to be a disposable passerby? Who is this person dating the gloomy, eerie boss of a supernatural movie?
A quick look at the plots:
1. The Medium
Wen Jingzhi travels to Thailand with a tour group. There, he meets a beautiful, alluring man, and the two begin a relationship.
The man adores him, blurting out sweet nothings and wanting to cling to him all day long. He's also possessive and disturbingly obsessive, which frightens Wen Jingzhi.
So, when the fifteen-day trip ends, Wen Jingzhi cruelly abandons him and returns home to resume his ordinary life. That's when strange things begin to happen.
He is plagued by nightmares, and strange rashes start appearing on his body. When doctors can't help, he turns to the occult, only to be told that he has been afflicted with a love curse...
When he returns to Thailand and kneels before the man, begging him to let him go, the man helps him up with a sinister smile, undisguised desire burning in his eyes.
"You know what I want, baby, don't you?"
2. The Painted Demon
After his family goes bankrupt, Wen Jingzhi has to sell off their assets. With nowhere else to turn, he reluctantly returns to his ancestral home. While cleaning it, he unexpectedly finds an ancient painting covered in dust. Overjoyed, he prepares to sell it.
Curious, Wen Jingzhi unrolls the painting and sees a woman dressed in white. She has an aloof air, a face as lovely as a peach blossom, and dark red eyes that regard him with an inscrutable smile.
The painting is so beautiful that Wen Jingzhi can no longer bear to sell it. He also notices that the woman in the painting seems to be growing more lifelike.
One night, the painting on the table quietly unrolls. The scene inside is so vivid that Wen Jingzhi walks into it against his will.
Inside the painting, he marries the beautiful woman. His wife seems to have some peculiar tastes... Not only is he always forced into the submissive role, she also often gets up in the middle of the night and disappears. His instincts tell him he can't stay here any longer.
But when he returns to the outside world, his beautiful wife suddenly changes. She sheds her dress and cuts off her long hair. Her voice turns low, and a crazed smile spreads across her usually gentle face.
"Jingzhi, you promised me, didn't you? You can't leave here."
3. The Senior
When Wen Jingzhi starts school, Shen Que, a sophomore, pursues him relentlessly.
Shen Que comes from a wealthy family. With no parents to discipline him, he has grown spoiled and nasty, and can spew all sorts of vicious remarks. But he is stunningly beautiful, and everyone thinks he resembles a mandrake flower.
Beautiful, yet deadly poisonous.
For some reason, this very person starts pursuing Wen Jingzhi, showering him with flattery, acting pitiful and wronged. In the end, Wen Jingzhi can't resist the temptation and agrees to date him.
After they get together, Shen Que wants to give Wen Jingzhi every good thing in the world. But Wen Jingzhi insists on keeping their relationship secret, leaving Shen Que anxious and insecure. He starts following Wen Jingzhi around and even cruelly taunts anyone who gets close to him.
At last, Wen Jingzhi can't stand his spoiled behavior anymore and breaks up with him. No matter how pitifully Shen Que begs him to stay, Wen Jingzhi remains unmoved.
As he leaves, Shen Que's eyes are red from crying. He stares at Wen Jingzhi, his beautiful eyes fixed on him, his lips trembling as he shouts:
"You'll regret this! You'll definitely regret it..."
Wen Jingzhi dismisses him, but the next day, terrible news spreads across campus.
Shen Que jumped from a building.
From then on, Wen Jingzhi is distracted every day, and his health grows weaker and weaker.
In another dimension, invisible to everyone, Shen Que leans sweetly against Wen Jingzhi's shoulder.
"Jingzhi, we can be together again."
4. The Singer
Wen Jingzhi is an obscure online singer. His lover, Shen Que, works at the same agency and is also a singer. Shen Que is far more popular, and has a much better voice.
They are both at the bottom of the agency's roster. One day, the manager has a chance to debut one of them. His lover, feeling sorry for how hard Wen Jingzhi has it, voluntarily gives him the opportunity. But the manager gives the debut spot to Shen Que anyway.
Consumed by jealousy, Wen Jingzhi breaks up with Shen Que without giving him a chance to respond, then quickly distances himself and takes a leave of absence to clear his head back home.
He has no idea that his poor lover is being bullied and ostracized by the other singers every day because he got the chance to debut.
When Wen Jingzhi returns to the agency, he learns that Shen Que died by suicide. Guilt and unease torment him day after day.
Around then, a young singer who looks very much like Shen Que joins the agency. He's talented and lively, and everyone praises him. The young man also seems to be interested in Wen Jingzhi, so Wen Jingzhi can't help starting a relationship with him.
But no matter how much the young man resembles Shen Que, he's still only a substitute. Burdened by guilt, Wen Jingzhi asks him to break up.
To his surprise, the young man, who has always done whatever he asks, suddenly changes expression. His eyes turn dark and gloomy.
"You didn't like me gentle as water, and you didn't like me passionate as fire. What do I have to become for you to be satisfied?"
"Or do you prefer the way I used to be, darling?"
5. Online Romance
Wen Jingzhi is in love, in an online relationship. His girlfriend's profile picture is a cute anime girl, and her real-life photos are stunning.
After chatting for a while, he realizes that his girlfriend is extremely possessive. She even demands that he report where he's been and who he's spoken to every day. Her messages are strange, too.
[Jingjing, don't go seeing anyone behind my back, okay? I can't promise I won't do something crazy if you do :-D]
[Jingjing, you're so cute. I like you so much. Sob, I wish I could be with you every day?]
[I like you so much, so much, so much, so much, so much, so much?]
That's when he gradually realizes he may have ended up with a total yandere...
He rather enjoys it, so they get along like a house on fire. They agree to meet in person, but the moment he sees Shen Que, his jaw drops.
Definitely a yandere, sure, but... why is he a guy?
He runs away. When Shen Que demands an explanation, Wen Jingzhi blocks and deletes him everywhere, all in one go, never to see him again.
But he never expected Shen Que to be so devastated that he would take his own life, calling Wen Jingzhi's name until the very end.
Only then does Wen Jingzhi understand that Shen Que loved him to the point of madness. Out of guilt, he attends Shen Que's funeral. He thinks it's all over, but gradually, his life begins to fill with inexplicable supernatural occurrences.
Just as he's about to break down, the profile picture on Shen Que's long-abandoned account lights up again. A new message appears on his phone:
[Jingjing, long time no see. Have you missed me? ^▽^?]
[I'm right behind you right now?]
6. The Boy from the Small Town
To escape their debts, Wen Jingzhi and his family move to a sparsely populated seaside town.
After transferring to a new school, he notices a disabled boy in his class. The boy is withdrawn and taciturn, and walks with a pronounced limp. He looks miserable and pitiful.
From his classmates, Wen Jingzhi learns that the boy was disabled in a car accident, which also killed his parents.
His relatives had initially been willing to take care of him, but as time passed, they grew tired of his strange personality. Their careful attention gradually turned into frequent beatings and verbal abuse.
Feeling sorry for the boy, Wen Jingzhi begins helping him in secret.
As they spend more and more time together, an unexpected affection grows between them. Finally, one summer afternoon, the two boys, having just come of age, give themselves to each other in an abandoned wooden shack.
After that, they can't get enough of each other, and their relationship grows ever closer. But their happiness doesn't last. Wen Jingzhi's mother discovers their affair and flies into a rage. While Wen Jingzhi is away, she takes a group of people to the boy's home and beats him until he's covered in bruises.
By the time Wen Jingzhi finds out, it's too late. He ignores his parents' attempts to stop him, but on his way to the boy's home, a speeding car hits him, leaving him unconscious and in intensive care.
He becomes a vegetable. When the boy learns that Wen Jingzhi is in a vegetative state, he throws himself into the sea in despair.
Five years later, Wen Jingzhi suddenly wakes from his vegetative state. He remembers everything except his relationship with the boy. His parents cry with joy, and he starts a new life.
Just when he thinks everything has returned to normal, his company sends him on an assignment back to the town where he once lived. There, he meets a young man with a slight limp. Though it's their first time meeting, the young man feels strangely familiar.
When Wen Jingzhi asks if the young man knows him, he smiles, his eyes curving up at the corners.
"Of course I know you. How could I not?"
"We were close enough to sleep together, after all."
Section Break
[What's it like to be loved by a nonhuman monster?]
1. The Impostor
Lin Xingzhi has a boyfriend. They've only been dating for a few months, and he can count the number of times they've met on one hand. Whenever they're together, the man is as cold as a stranger.
At last, one day, Lin Xingzhi can't take it anymore and has a huge fight with his boyfriend. Just as he's about to break up with him, his boyfriend takes the initiative to approach him.
This time, the man seems like a completely different person. He's so affectionate and clingy, and his childish attempts to act cute leave Lin Xingzhi helpless.
But strangely, his boyfriend's expressions are always stiff. When he sits still, he looks just like a paper effigy... But that's not a big deal.
Just as their relationship is heating up, one night Lin Xingzhi gets up and discovers his clingy boyfriend sitting in front of the mirror, trying to adjust his crooked nose with his hands...
Lin Xingzhi is scared out of his wits. The next day, while his boyfriend is away, he packs up and moves to the neighboring city, then deletes and blocks every one of his boyfriend's contact details.
Just as he thinks his life is about to return to normal, one rainy night after work, an unexpected visitor appears outside his apartment.
The tall man slowly turns around. His once-handsome face is completely featureless, except for a mouth. When he sees Lin Xingzhi, he stretches it into a grin full of fangs.
"A-Zhi, long time no see. Did you miss me?"
2. The Spider
A stunningly beautiful boy named Xiao Hechuan transfers into the class. He's gentle with everyone, generous with his money, and excels in school, quickly winning everyone's favor.
Lin Xingzhi is the class monitor and used to be the most popular person in class. Since Xiao Hechuan transferred in, his friends and classmates have gradually drifted away from him. Even the homeroom teacher now looks at Xiao Hechuan with admiration, and after one parents' meeting, even Lin Xingzhi's family can't stop praising him.
Lin Xingzhi's resentment steadily grows. Then Xiao Hechuan asks to meet him alone. Lin Xingzhi expects a provocation, but the boy, who is always kind to everyone, acts as if he's gone mad and confesses his endless love for him.
That's when Lin Xingzhi discovers that Xiao Hechuan isn't human at all. He's a spider! Even worse, he asks Lin Xingzhi to sleep with him!
Lin Xingzhi is horrified. As he struggles to push Xiao Hechuan away, he accidentally shoves him off the building.
After that, everyone abandons Lin Xingzhi, leaving him isolated. Just as he's helpless and alone, Xiao Hechuan appears beside him, excitement shining in his eyes. He puts an arm around Lin Xingzhi and whispers in his ear:
"Wonderful. Now you're finally mine."
3. The Tentacles
While on vacation, Lin Xingzhi discovers an unknown creature by the sea. It looks like a sea intestine, but much shorter and thinner, a limp little strand that looks as if it might dissolve into water at any moment.
As a biology enthusiast, he decides to raise it and takes it back to his lab.
At the same time, the creature grows bigger and develops more tentacles. It becomes self-aware, learns to speak a few simple words, and develops strange feelings for Lin Xingzhi.
When Lin Xingzhi gets home from work, it wriggles around his thigh. When he takes a bath, it slips into the tub and bathes with him. When he sleeps, it secretly coils around his body, stroking his skin with its cold, sticky tentacles.
Eventually, the secret gets out. One night, Lin Xingzhi discovers its lewd behavior and realizes he can't keep this unknown creature around any longer.
So, ignoring its pleas and tears, he stuffs it into a wooden crate and throws it back into the ocean.
He thinks it's all over. But while traveling abroad for a work trip, he is grabbed from behind by a tentacle, which covers his mouth and drags him behind some rocks on a foreign shore.
Behind the rocks is a strange man. He's beautiful, but the words he speaks make Lin Xingzhi feel as if he's plunged into an icy abyss:
"I've caught you, my lover, my wife. You'll never leave me again."
