When Jiang Muwan was in high school, anonymous chat apps were all the rage. After class, her classmates chattered excitedly about them. Someone asked who she wanted to message, and from the corner of her eye, she glanced at Qi Zheng, standing by the door.
Dappled sunlight and shadows shifted across the room. He strolled in at his ease, then suddenly stopped beside her. His tall shadow fell over her desk as he set down her water card. His voice was a little hoarse. "I found it on the basketball court."
It was the first time Jiang Muwan had ever been so close to Qi Zheng. Her heart raced wildly. She didn't dare look up. She only glanced at the name on the card, hurriedly put it away, and whispered, "Thank you."
After he left, she took out her phone on a whim and sent him an anonymous message.
But he never replied.
A few years later, they had gradually forgotten about the anonymous chat app. At a class reunion, Qi Zheng chose truth during a game of Truth or Dare. The question he drew was: What was the thing you most regretted doing in school?
Jiang Muwan followed everyone's gaze toward Qi Zheng, sitting some distance away. He held a glass of wine and leaned back in his chair, looking tired. Maybe it was her imagination, but she felt as if his gaze was passing through the crowd and settling on her.
She turned away, but heard him say slowly, "What I regret most is not replying to that anonymous message in time."
