Beiping Air Force pilot x heiress of a Hankou wharf
After the Treaty of Tianjin was signed in 1858, Hankou opened to foreign trade, and the wharves came under the control of gangs or local bosses. Her father has suffered a stroke, and her elder brother has enlisted in the army, so Zhu Fangsi, the heiress of the Dragon King Temple Wharf, has no choice but to step in and manage the family business.
In 1937, Nanjing falls and China's air force is all but wiped out. The Nationalist government assigns Zhu Fangsi to secretly transport a plane to a temporary airfield in Hankou for repairs.
But nobody mentioned that she would have to transport a person, too! Before leaving, her brother warned her not to get too close to the Nationalist army: take the money, do the job, and don't get involved in anything extra.
So they come to blows. In the end, Liang Yuping taps her forehead again and again with a gun whose safety is still on. "Do you have any idea what's going on out there? Do you know Wuhan is the next crucial battlefield? We're united against the Japanese now, so stop messing around..."
Zhu Fangsi lowers her fists. Liang Yuping thinks she's finally listened, but she leans in to take a closer look at his face and says happily, "Big brother, you're so handsome."
Liang Yuping wasn't lying to her. On February 18, 1938, the Chinese and Japanese air forces clashed for the first time. On June 12, the Battle of Wuhan officially began. His plane kept gliding through the blood-red dusk above Chu. Meanwhile, the gang rivalries, schemes, and betrayals at the wharves make Zhu Fangsi grow up fast. If Liang Yuping belongs to the skies, then she belongs to the Han and Yangtze Rivers.
A great river rolls in wide waves, the wind carries the scent of rice flowers along both banks.
My home is right there on the shore. I'm used to hearing the boatmen's chants and seeing the white sails on the river.
