But little by little, Jiang Lingyu found herself less and less willing to leave.

When Su Xiao was seventeen, a friend told her something.

So Chen Mu doesn't like Su Xiao.

But he always follows behind her like a clingy puppy.

Even though Su Xiao often makes the puppy angry and sad, it never gets mad at her. It just quietly hides away to heal on its own.

It seems able to put up with anything from Su Xiao. All she has to do is crook a finger, and it comes running with its tail wagging.

But Su Xiao makes the puppy cry.

She lies to it, then abandons it.

When they meet again, the gentle puppy has turned into a cold-faced big bad wolf.

Su Xiao: But my mom is in his hands.

After a two-second silence, a string of question marks appears on the other end.

Su Xiao locks her phone and looks again at the man in front of her, no longer boyish, handsome in his white medical uniform.

Her long-lost high school deskmate, who is also her mother's attending physician.

Su Xiao tries to make small talk. "I heard the cafeteria lady from our high school got together with the security guard. Is that true?"

Chen Mu says nothing, his eyes icy.

Seeing that this isn't going well, Su Xiao quickly changes the subject. "Oh, right, I went with a friend to your sister's new movie premiere yesterday. You should've seen how wild the fans were. I almost got trampled as soon as I went in..."

Chen Mu cuts her off, his lips parting. "I know."

"What?" Su Xiao thinks for a moment. "You were there too?"

"Not for long. I left as soon as you arrived," Chen Mu says.

Su Xiao: Ah... What a shame.

The day before her twenty-fourth birthday, Su Xiao sits alone in Sijiping Park and cries for a very long time. When she's cried until she has no strength left, she sees Chen Mu.

He stands in the last light of dusk and holds out his hand. His cold-faced-wolf persona gone, he gently asks if she'd like to come home with him.

But Su Xiao stubbornly pushes his hand away, eyes red as she asks if he thinks she's pitiful, as if she'd have a terrible life without him.

"I do."

"I'm the one who'd have a terrible life without you."

Chen Mu kneels in front of Su Xiao, rests his forehead against the hollow of her shoulder, and holds her trembling fingertips. His voice is tender to the extreme. "So would you let me have a better life?"

Su Xiao's eyes slowly grow moist.

The puppy she accidentally lost seems to have come back to her, wagging its tail once more.
