There is a high bridge on the Huangpu Bund. From the bridge, you can see the shanties where the poor live in the distance, so it came to be called the Bridge of Desolation.
One late night, two desperate women walked onto the Bridge of Desolation. Shivering as they gazed at the ceaseless river, each saw the same struggle in the other's eyes.
One was a poor student who couldn't afford to stay in school; the other was a woman of the pleasure quarters who had sold her soul. One had a neat, short haircut and a pure, clear gaze; the other had curled hair, red lips, and seductive eyes.
Later, they made a promise on the Bridge of Desolation: “I'll help you stay in school, and you'll teach me to read and write.”
