Pei Yiwei transmigrated into a book, becoming the scum gong in a revenge novel about torturing villains. In the book, just after he married the protagonist shou, he joined forces with his beloved to frame the protagonist shou, getting his entire family arrested and sentenced to death.
The protagonist shou is Gu Jingzhi. After dying, he was reborn in the body of a famous entertainer with a similar appearance.
Gu Jingzhi used his identity as an entertainer to get close to Pei Yiwei and secretly build up his power for revenge. He hated Pei Yiwei to the bone, yet had no choice but to pretend to be friendly and ingratiate himself with him. This made Gu Jingzhi's mind grow more twisted and his heart grow darker.
Later, Gu Jingzhi became a Grand Commander with power over the realm. Pei Yiwei was ruined by his revenge, losing his reputation, family, and home before finally being tortured to death.
When Pei Yiwei transmigrated into the book, he happened to see Gu Jingzhi being beheaded.
Not long after, someone sent Pei Yiwei a handsome entertainer who was gentle and obedient.
Pei Yiwei: The countdown to my death has begun!
Desperate to survive, Pei Yiwei struggled to keep the plot from unfolding as written. He fawned over Gu Jingzhi while secretly trying to get rid of him.
Pei Yiwei deliberately had Gu Jingzhi enter the military examinations, thinking that if he lost, he would go perform in Jiangnan and never return to the capital.
Instead, Gu Jingzhi came back as the top military graduate.
Pei Yiwei pulled strings to have Gu Jingzhi sent to guard the frontier, thinking, You can stay there your whole life, staring at the yellow sands.
Instead, Gu Jingzhi conquered the neighboring country in less than a year.
Even after Gu Jingzhi rose to the highest ranks, not one of Pei Yiwei's plans to abandon him ever succeeded.
Pei Yiwei watched with his own eyes as Gu Jingzhi dealt with every villain, one by one, and thought, At last, it's my turn.

The Grand Commander's residence was filled with evidence on the desk: Deputy Minister of the Court of Judicial Review Pei Yiwei had failed to uphold his marital duties and framed the Gu family.
The officials below watched Grand Commander Gu's face grow darker and darker, feeling that this time, their attempt at flattery had gone wrong.
Gu Jingzhi swept his cold gaze over the trembling officials. "Do any of you have anything else? If not, I need to go home and cook for Deputy Minister Pei."
The officials: "N-no, nothing else, Grand Commander. Do you need firewood at your residence? We can take those papers off your desk and bring them over to burn."
