In front of outsiders, Ren Mu never denies the assumption that she and Ren Ji are biological siblings.
They look alike and their names sound alike, so it makes sense that people would mistake them for siblings, even if she is only trying to convince herself.
Ren Mu always feels that Ren Ji's existence must be Heaven's last act of mercy toward her.
But she can never repay what she owes him.
One afternoon, when he picked her up after school, they sat in the car. Ren Ji reached for her hand out of habit, but she gently pulled away. In an instant, the temperature in the car plummeted.
By the time the car stopped outside their home, before she had even entered the courtyard, he had grabbed her and held her in place.
"What was that about?" he asked.
Ren Mu lowered her eyes. "It was nothing, big brother. We're just grown up now. We can't act as carelessly as we did when we were kids."
Ren Ji looked at her with a cold laugh, disbelief the only thing left in his eyes. "Carelessly? Tell me, what counts as crossing the line? You reaching for my hand first? Throwing yourself into my arms?"
He approached her step by step, pinched her chin, and forced her to look up. "Or maybe constantly saying you want to sleep with me?"
Reader's guide:
They are not related by blood. Their shared surname is a coincidence, and "big brother" refers to a childhood friend they've known since they were young.
