Since the Year of Gengzi, everything in the world has changed in subtle ways. Disasters have struck one after another, leaving humanity in dire straits. First came an epidemic. Everyone feared for their lives, but some people bravely went to the front lines to stop the spread, and eventually the disease was overcome. The siblings Chen Baishui and Chen Luorui lost their parents in the process. Then came the fires. At first, people thought they were natural disasters, but it turned out they were man-made. As Team 123, led by Chen Luorui, and other teams investigated, the truth gradually came to light. Someone had committed heinous crimes, making it even harder for humanity to survive. Climate change brought frequent extreme weather: raging winds and storms, endless frozen winters. One calamity after another made life even more difficult for everyone. People had to face not only extreme weather, but also external enemies and those inside the barriers. To guard against the many dangers, the authorities built shelters throughout the land. People did everything they could to survive inside them. Yet more suffocating than the disasters themselves were the barriers. Those within them called them heaven, and maintained a complete order of their own, distinct from the outside world. The people inside preached the end of the world and ultimate bliss, disregarded human decency, and caused great harm to those outside. With the protagonist and others working together, humanity beyond the barriers put them on trial. The trial did not go smoothly at first, but fortunately, in the end, those outside the barriers prevailed, and human civilization returned to the right track.
