The title comes from the line "Open the mirror and seek the spring sunshine" in Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu's poem A Reply to a Lady's Dream. Here, "spring sunshine" means the light of spring.

Li Baicheng rose to fame at a young age. Armed with her Jinghui saber, she fought her way into the Xizhi tribal commander's tent, becoming the talk of the land. Three years later, the Battle of Suiyin ended in victory, but the Wolf's Fury Battalion, which had held back twenty thousand ferocious enemies with only three thousand soldiers, was wiped out. Only its female commander, Li Baicheng, survived. She took off her armor and disappeared without a trace.
Many said that Li Baicheng was a woman after all, and that she had been terrified by the fighting during the defense and fled after removing her armor. Then a captured general from the border tribes came forward to defend his worthy opponent. So others said Li Baicheng had taken off her armor because she had betrayed her country. Otherwise, why would an enemy general speak up for her? And if the entire Wolf's Fury Battalion had been wiped out, why was she the only survivor?

Twenty thousand enemy soldiers surrounded Suiyin. Inside the city, food and water had run out; outside, there were no reinforcements. The Wolf's Fury Battalion held on for nine months, surviving at last by drinking human blood and eating human flesh... Years after leaving the army, Li Baicheng was still plagued by nightmares every night. The only reason her hollowed-out body had survived was the lamb the village chief had insisted she raise.
Eventually, the lamb became a flock. One day, while herding sheep, Li Baicheng pulled a badly wounded, unconscious woman from the river. That day, she also found the spirit that had been wandering aimlessly for so long.
