I love my husband's elder brother
/
The day I got married was the first time I met Xie Yu. He came to escort me to the wedding. Dressed in plain white, his raven hair blowing in the wind as he rode a chestnut horse, he caught my eye just once, and my heart began to race.
/
I saw Xie Yu again on the day I returned to my family home as a newlywed. My husband was bedridden with a long illness, so the Xie family sent me home alone.
We encountered bandits on the way. Outside the carriage, horses whinnied and weapons clashed. Our servants were defeated and fled, while I sat inside, gripping half a pair of scissors tightly.
The carriage curtain was lifted, and blinding sunlight poured in. I closed my eyes in despair and, unwilling to surrender, plunged the scissors toward myself.
"It's me." Xie Yu's voice was calm and controlled. "Forgive the intrusion."
I opened my eyes and saw a hand, elegant as bamboo and jade, reach through the carriage curtain and guide me steadily onto his horse.
He rode through the bandits and onto the mountain path. I clutched the robes fluttering behind him. The early-spring wind was bone-chilling, and I caught the quiet, peaceful scent of sandalwood on his clothes.
/
A year later, my husband died. My mother-in-law called me a bringer of bad luck and ordered me to be buried with her son.
I was held down as the old servant tried to force poisonous soup down my throat. As I struggled, I thought of Xie Yu on horseback the day I got married. How wonderful it would be if he were wearing wedding clothes.
I smiled and stopped struggling. Just as the poison reached my lips, there was a deafening crash. The doors of the mourning hall hit the ground.
Xie Yu came in with his sword drawn and kicked the old servant aside. He knelt on one knee in front of me and wiped the poison from the corner of my mouth with his thumb.
He fought to rein in his overwhelming emotions and said steadily, "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
