Li Jinyi looked up and met Cheng Yi's gaze across the table.
The older girl got excited. "You two can trade! Go get to know him, and our cooking club will have a handsome face to show off!"
Before the dinner was over, a friendly older student had already sent Cheng Yi's WeChat contact her way.
Seeing the familiar background in his profile picture, Li Jinyi finally remembered that the junior everyone had their eye on had gone to the same high school as her.
So, in the hope of leaving the club as soon as possible, Li Jinyi embarked on a long campaign of friendship.
For example, she showed up without warning on Cheng Yi's way back to the dorm, carrying three jin of grapes.
"Do you miss home, Xiao Cheng? Our club often makes food from back home."
Or, she'd write him long messages late at night, forcing him to listen to a sad love story she'd made up out of thin air.
"So this scumbag told me online that he liked me, but it turned out he had another girlfriend right here in town. At first I was heartbroken, but cooking changed me..."
After nearly two weeks of this, Cheng Yi not only showed no interest in joining the club, but also blocked Li Jinyi.
[For three days straight, all he replied was "Mm." And just now, he blocked me!]
[I can't handle him. So who was it that said he knew me in the first place?]
Staring at the screen full of messages that had been sent but rejected by the recipient, Li Jinyi angrily fired off ten messages to the older girl.
The older girl didn't reply, but Cheng Yi's profile picture suddenly popped up in the chat again.
[Li Jinyi, yesterday you said you'd break up with that guy.]
[If you get back together, you're a dog.]
Li Jinyi froze, then replied without thinking.
[If I don't get back together with him, will you join our club?]
As soon as the message went out, the "typing" indicator at the top instantly stopped.

Li Jinyi tentatively sent a question mark.
Sure enough, she'd been blocked again.

After learning they'd gone to the same high school, Cheng Yi felt that Li Jinyi seemed to have become more enthusiastic.
She gave him grapes to cool him down.
She peeled a pear and cut it into small pieces for him to take to military training.
The only downside was that she kept bringing up the club nobody wanted to join, and loved telling him about her failed online relationship.
After a week of this, someone in the dorm suddenly asked Cheng Yi:
That older girl who's pursuing you, doesn't she already have a boyfriend?
Pursuing me?
Cheng Yi automatically ignored the rest of the sentence.
