When Shen Yutang was in school, her family was wealthy and doted on her, and she had plenty of pocket money. She had no interest in studying and was obsessed with stories about training dogs, so she paid a quiet, fair-skinned, good-student boy from a poor family in the high school division to keep as a plaything.
Every month, she sent Fan Xian money, but in return, he had to be her little campus pet, indulging the wild fantasies of a teenage girl whose tastes had been corrupted by shoujo manga.
Their purely financial relationship lasted until Shen Yutang went abroad. Before leaving, she called her puppy over for one last, very thorough play session, left him some money, and disappeared. She also left him with a warning: "A boy like you should be careful out there and protect yourself. You might not come across another benefactor as kindhearted as me."
She had no idea that Fan Xian, who only seemed helpless, innocent, and poor (none of which was true), had set his sights on her long ago.
Their relationship wasn't because Shen Yutang was generous with her money, either. Fan Xian had planned it all.

After her family went bankrupt, Shen Yutang returned to the country in a sorry state. Deep in debt and barely able to take care of herself, the heiress was at a loss. Then her landlord kicked her out for failing to pay rent.
Who would have thought she'd run into Fan Xian on the street, just after he'd attended a banquet?
The boy she'd known had grown into a man. His features had matured, and he looked stronger, as if he'd been keeping up with his workouts.
"Looks like you've been doing pretty well," Shen Yutang said, foolishly happy for him.
Yet somehow, she found herself caught up in a new financial arrangement. Only this time, their roles of dominant and submissive were reversed.
It wasn't until the man pinned her across his lap so she couldn't move that Shen Yutang realized something was wrong.
Oh no. This wasn't unfinished business. He was here for revenge.

Much later, the puppy Shen Yutang had kept in school cupped her face and kissed away her tears, one by one.
She couldn't understand why Fan Xian treated her so well, yet bullied her at the same time.
She began to find their relationship unbearable, so as soon as she found a job, she tried to run away.
But Fan Xian wouldn't let her escape a second time.
"Fan Xian, please let me go. I'll pay you back. Why won't you stop holding on to me?"
"Maybe because I've been in love with you for many years."
