Instinctive Dependence

When Qiu Zihan first saw nine-year-old Xia Zhi at the age of sixteen, she was hiding in a cupboard and crying because the thunderstorm had frightened her. Qiu Zihan comforted her all night.

From then on, every rainy night, Qiu Zihan would knock on Xia Zhi's bedroom door and hold her close for nine years.

-

On Xia Zhi's twenty-second birthday, Qiu Zihan was twenty-seven.

On the first night after Qiu Zihan returned home, Xia Zhi walked up to his bedroom door. At the same moment, Qiu Zihan opened it.

Qiu Zihan asked her, "It's ten o'clock. What do you want?"

Xia Zhi said, "I want you to comfort me to sleep."

After a moment of silence, Qiu Zihan stepped aside, making room for her to come in.
