Steadfast and stubborn * Gentle and devoted
The world of the young Zhu Zhu is small: just the little courtyard, her grandmother, who is all she has, and her childhood friend, her older brother Shi Boding.
When Zhu Zhu is fifteen, people from the Shi family of Hong Kong come to take their young master home. Shi Boding leaves Zhu Zhu a check and tells her to take good care of herself and stop thinking about him.
Zhu Zhu clutches the hem of Shi Boding's clothes, crying and begging him not to go.
But he remains unmoved. Without even turning back, he gets into the back of a luxury car and closes his eyes, no longer looking at her through the window.
The year after he leaves, Zhu Zhu buries her grandmother, clutches the check, and crosses the sea, eventually finding the Shi family. The Shi family estate on Victoria Peak is grand and imposing. Zhu Zhu looks up at its high walls, then wisely turns around and goes home.
The following spring, Shi Boding ends the family power struggle and returns to the fishing village to look for her. All he finds is an uncashed check and the news that Zhu Zhu died in a fishing boat accident.

Newly qualified lawyer Zhu Zhu returns from an overseas assignment and is transferred to the group's Hong Kong headquarters.
On her first day, a colleague gossips with her: "The person on the top floor has been looking for a girl lately, like a madman. I hear she's from your hometown. Do you know anything about her?"
Zhu Zhu taps away at her keyboard and slowly shakes her head. "I've never heard of her."
"Across the water, no old love remains; in Gusu, the bells ring."
