“I used to wonder why I was incomplete.”
“Incomplete?”
“Yes, sir. That's how they described me.”
The girl's voice paused, then continued.
“An unfortunate person destined to be incomplete. Perhaps death is the best fate she can hope for.”
“Do you believe that?”
“No, never! That's why I ran away,” Modena said softly.
Why believe fools in robes? That was a question Modena had asked herself for a long time.
She had never considered it before, but now she had no choice but to think about it.
Maybe it was because her life was in danger, or maybe it was simply the instinct to survive. She escaped that foolish world, the world where a single word could decide life or death.
She thought she would die, that she would disappear into that black hole, but that was only what she believed.
The new world welcomed her with open arms. It never cared whether she was incomplete.
“Welcome home, child,” it said.
For once, Modena lowered her guard and fell into a deep sleep. Perhaps when she woke, a beautiful new beginning would await her.
She had never wanted anything so badly.
“Sleep, child,” the new world wished her well.
Curled in the arms of familiar people, Modena didn't want to open her eyes. She was afraid this might all be a beautiful dream.
“Modena, believe in yourself.” Someone familiar kissed her forehead.
“Good night. Sweet dreams.”
