A quick explanation: One form of the vampire's first embrace involves a vampire draining someone's blood and making them drink the vampire's blood.

In the first half of the story, Xiao Ji does not undergo a true first embrace. Since he's drunk Xiao Ye's blood a few times, he has vampire toxins in his body and displays some vampire traits, making him half a vampire. (These traits are unstable.)

This will be explained later in the main story. Since the early chapters are told from Xiao Ji's perspective, he doesn't know Xiao Ye is a vampire, so it's not explained yet.
