The suspended leaves began to fall again. At long last, time in this frozen world started flowing once more.

After returning the troublesome soul he'd just managed to recover to its body, System GM061 relaxed only halfway. It still didn't dare leave, much less possess the body itself, so it hovered there, tensely monitoring these coordinates.

"Cough, cough... Cough, cough..."

The boy lying on the ground finally stirred. He curled up and coughed in evident pain.

He lay facedown in the weeds, back arched as he coughed and wheezed for a long while. Then he braced himself on his knees and slowly stood up, before suddenly bursting into laughter.

"Hahahahahaha... Cough, cough... So that's how it is... Ha..."

His wild laughter mingled with dry coughs. Suddenly, the ominous red-glowing ability attacked everything around him without warning! The black beast formed from his coat relentlessly tore into everything near the boy.

This sudden burst of bloodlust made even the incorporeal System shudder, but...

Perfect! He woke up and used his ability so skillfully. His soul and memories are intact! This world won't gradually fall apart from losing an important character! If GM061 could make a human expression, it would have been weeping with joy.

The boy before it was unmistakably sixteen-year-old Ryunosuke Akutagawa. He was still immature, but already crazy and cruel enough to become the fearsome Port Mafia's rabid dog one day.

"Cough, cough... You're still watching, aren't you, Mr. 'System'? Cough..." Akutagawa covered his mouth and nose with one hand, steadying his breathing and suppressing the itch in his throat. He looked around with wide eyes. "I still have something to ask." He couldn't see where the invisible System was, but guessed it must still be nearby.

Ah, wonderful, wonderful! That gaze, that way of speaking, he was definitely the real Ryunosuke Akutagawa. GM061 frantically filled the data only it could see with its own ecstatic comments. It would have been even better if this young but terrifying Mafia member had woken up with no memories at all. Those greedy spirit enforcers from another world were to blame. They'd been right on their heels, leaving no chance to try formatting his memories. Thankfully, the jumble of memories they hadn't managed to erase hadn't affected his soul.

More than twenty years of memories had been compressed into three days. Trying to recall them would probably only cause dizziness and headaches. Seeing Akutagawa frown and clutch his forehead, GM061 hurriedly responded:

"Good day, Master Akutagawa! Congratulations on your successful return!" the mechanical voice said quickly and respectfully.

"I'm terribly sorry you were missing for three days, but your weapons and supplies are ready. Use them as you please."

They were inside an abandoned factory. Various weapons lay scattered among the weeds, and two briefcases sat nearby, filled with a huge sum of cash. If necessary, GM061 could also create signs of a fight. They had agreed on this beforehand, to explain Akutagawa's disappearance.

"If you need information on all the organizations, we..."

But Akutagawa interrupted its rambling.

"The rest doesn't matter." There was no light in his dark eyes. They were as cold as the depths of a well.

GM061 immediately went silent, ready to listen to his orders.

It had long expected that after returning to his original body and recovering his memories, he would make new demands. But as long as they weren't beyond its abilities, it would grant them. Once this deal was done, it would leave at once! It would never come near Yokohama again!

"Tell me..."

A spark of excitement suddenly lit those fierce eyes, but there was no trace of bloodlust in them.

"...the address of that orphanage."

Huh?

What? The orphanage... orphan...age?

GM061 froze for a full three seconds. After analyzing the data 36,980 times, it arrived at the same conclusion every time. Now it let out a shriek of despair inside the System:

Why, of all things, did he still remember that he liked Atsushi Nakajima best?!

1. [AkuAtsu] Ryunosuke Akutagawa x Atsushi Nakajima, a passionate romance with mutual devotion. But, well, it's the two of them, so even after ending up on opposing sides, they'll still get into fights.

2. [Slight Soukoku] Osamu Dazai x Chuuya Nakahara, hints of a secret relationship across opposing sides. But, well, it's the two of them, so pretty much everyone older than them knows or has figured it out.

3. [PoeRan, either way] A little bit of Poe having a crush on Ranpo, with no fixed dynamic. But, well, Ranpo has Super Deduction...

4. All other characters are strictly platonic. There are one-sided crushes, such as Higuchi -> Akutagawa, Montgomery -> Atsushi, and Tachihara -> Gin.

★★★ About the plot ★★★

1. Mostly from Akutagawa's perspective. Akutagawa has strange, mixed memories that spoil things, and Oda Sakunosuke's example and advice have shaped him into a dark Akutagawa unlike the original.

2. Atsushi has few appearances before the original main story's timeline begins, during the Man-Eating Tiger incident.

3. This isn't an IF route. Oda Sakunosuke survives, but Dazai doesn't know. Kyoka Izumi has a strange spirit following her.

4. The story is mostly set in Yokohama. There are a few transmigrators, Systems, and crossover elements outside Yokohama, but not many, and they aren't the focus.

5. Includes original characters and abilities inspired by real authors, mainly wreaking havoc on the list of Akutagawa Prize winners.

6. It's a crossover in name, but not a serious crossover. Other than briefly touching on a few Detective Conan characters, it doesn't connect to other manga plots, though it makes plenty of jokes about other manga. More obscure references will be noted after the chapters.
