A dark night with high winds, a perfect night for murder and arson.
On yet another unremarkable night in Gotham, Batman and Robin head to a warehouse basement to rescue kidnapped children.
The moment they open the door, no bullets, cannons, or biological weapons come flying out. Instead, a white cube with tentacles, shielding the children behind it, pelts them with snowballs.
Joyful Soul Alpha: "Wah!" (spits snowballs)
Damian, who gets hit by a snowball and somehow even hears a sound effect: ?
After the children explain what happened, Alpha realizes he's hit the wrong person. He floats over, goes "wah wah," and nuzzles Damian to apologize, then takes everyone off to rescue the other children.
On the way back.
Damian: ...
Damian: (Sends brainwaves saying he wants to keep it.)
Batman: "...No, Robin."
We already have plenty of animals at home.
Alpha: "Wah~"

Not long afterward, Hal is called in to identify Alpha's species.
Hal: (Scanning with his power ring.)
Hal: "...Uh, no doubt about it. He's a sentient building block?"
Alpha: "Ahh-wu..."
Barry: "Well... he's a very cute building block, too?"

Once everyone discovers Alpha likes eating snowballs, they start feeding him snowballs of all shapes and sizes every few days.
Before long, Alpha grows into Giant Alpha.
"Wah!"
With a black harness around him, Alpha goes wah-wah as he catches a hostage thrown from a building, spits snowballs to put out a fire, and slowly flies away.
"...For God's sake, what the hell has Batman adopted now?!"

Much later, Alpha is finally able to appear in human form.
A boy with a white jellyfish-shaped head appears before them.
Alpha: "This is my first time meeting you all in this form. I'm the [Lord of the Void]. I'm Joyful Soul Alpha. It's nice to meet you!"
Nine tentacles extend from beneath Alpha's hem and wave at everyone.
