Synopsis
Princess Yuanzhen believed that transmigrating was a reward meant just for her.
In her previous life, Pei Jing had spent every waking moment fighting and scheming to protect her maternal family's legacy. After half a lifetime of exhausting herself, she woke up as a princess with every comfort at her fingertips, whose only responsibility was to eat, drink, and enjoy herself.
Pei Jing could even laugh in her sleep.
As the late emperor's most beloved daughter and the current emperor's only younger sister raised in the palace, Pei Jing's position was unassailable. Even the true princesses had to mind their aunt's mood.
Her exceptional circumstances gave Pei Jing all the confidence she needed. Taking the attitude of "when in Rome, enjoy yourself," she decided to lie flat.
And so, to everyone's astonishment, the princess who had always been doted on in the palace by the emperor wasn't a refined, virtuous lady who was learned and well-mannered. She was a spoiled wastrel who did nothing but tease cats and dogs and indulge in pleasure.
What's more... the first thing Princess Yuanzhen did after establishing her own residence was select male companions!
Pei Jing didn't care about the contemptuous, scornful looks everyone gave her. She even brought her beloved male companion to palace banquets. Her extravagance and debauchery made it obvious that she didn't take anyone else seriously.
Until their wedding night, when her consort asked with a dark expression, "Does the princess want me, or that pretty boy?"
Beneath the swaying wedding candles, the scorn at the corners of Pei Jing's lips became even more glaring. "Of course, the one with a pretty face and a sweet disposition is more to my liking."
As one of Princess Yuanzhen's favorites, Shi Yun spent every day at her side. The expressions he saw most often were jealousy and contempt.
He was unmoved by them. He only found them ironic.
Everyone saw him as a kept man who relied on his looks, and no one recognized him as Xie Jiulang, once the most admired young man among the aristocratic clans.
A wrongful conviction had sent Shi Yun's life crashing down from the heights. To clear his family's name, he had lain low for years and given up his identity. After returning to the capital, he went to great lengths to create opportunities to meet Princess Yuanzhen.
He stood like a jade tree among orchids, and his smile was like the moonlight embracing you. Unlike any man Pei Jing had ever met, Shi Yun was not only handsome and refined, but also had an elegant, graceful air about him. He seemed like an exiled immortal born into a poor family, making him impossible not to pity and adore.
He planned every step and calculated every move, finally becoming the most cherished male companion of Princess Yuanzhen.
According to Shi Yun's original plan, his next step was to use Princess Yuanzhen's status to clear his path and make others do his dirty work. Pei Jing would be an excellent blade.
But the one wielding the blade didn't want it stained with blood on his behalf.
Pei Jing's open favoritism made Shi Yun hesitate. Before he could commit the sins that would stop at nothing to destroy his enemies, a god had already bent down to embrace him.
To keep Pei Jing from suffering for his sake, Shi Yun decided to flee the princess's residence on their wedding night. But before he could step out of the room, he saw Her Highness in her wedding robes.
"Where do you think you're running? We're only getting married. Did you think I'd stop wanting you?"
Shi Yun watched as Princess Yuanzhen searched out the dagger hidden against his chest with one hand, then handed him a gleaming sword with the other. He heard her whisper teasingly in his ear: "It's just the imperial court, isn't it? I can help you tear it down. What do you say?"
The wedding veil embroidered with golden dragons and phoenixes fell over Shi Yun's head. He heard himself reply, "I beg Your Highness to forgive me."
"What crime could my man possibly have committed?"
