In ancient times, the Da Hong clan was a noble family of the Western Pole Kingdom. Discontented with the Western Pole Emperor's suppression, they were courted by the Xuan Yuan clan and defected to the Eastern Pole Kingdom, becoming one of the four great clans of the Eastern Pole heartlands. After Da Hong Fuyu became engaged to Xuan Yuan Taizhong, she was framed and cursed. By day she became a man, and by night a woman, suffering through each transformation. On the eve of her wedding, Fuyu fled, provoking the Eastern Pole Emperor's fury and sparking a war. The emperor sent General Jiang Yan of the Kui Kui clan to attack the Western Pole Kingdom, but the Kui Kui clan unexpectedly switched sides along the way and joined the Western Pole. After conquering the Western Pole, the Eastern Pole Emperor branded the Longyan Army as rebels and drove the Kui Kui clan to Mount Baitou. Cursed, the Longyan Army could never see sunlight and could only live on the dark, damp mountain. King Luojia, under the alias Feng Yang, repaid General Jiang Yan for guiding him to enlightenment by taking his place in defending the Longyan Army, and promised to help lift the curse. Fuyu assumed the alias San Jie and hid in Chaoyang Town, where she became caught up in the struggle among the three armies. She was drawn into a tangle of love and hatred with Feng Yang, the Longyan Army's general and the Lord of Jile City; Xuan Yuan Taizhong of the Eastern Pole Kingdom; and Jiu Feng, a prince of Northern Qi.
