Su Ran transmigrates into a book, into a dynasty where love between men is the norm. The male lead gong is a mighty general, and Su Ran becomes his pitiful cannon-fodder wife. She isn’t difficult or malicious, but she is destined to make way for the male lead shou, meeting a tragic end by burning herself to death.
In the original, the male lead gong overthrows the royal family and becomes emperor, then lives happily ever after with the male lead shou.
After Su Ran arrives, she does three things to save herself.
First: Get a divorce!
Second: Lie low and work on infrastructure (though really, she’s running for her life from the male lead gong all over the world, building bases as she goes and rallying the people to resist their tenacious enemy).
Third: Join forces with the cannon-fodder emperor from the original, who is also the male lead gong’s unattainable first love, and form a mutual survival pact.
And so she becomes empress after divorcing her husband!
Su Ran takes to the role quite well. Whenever she feels like it, she summons the male lead gong, now a general, and flaunts her happy marriage. Watching him get so angry he looks ready to strangle her makes her burst into applause and laughter.
The emperor stands with his hands behind his back, then reaches out. "Empress, it's time to return to the palace for dinner. Zhao'er can't find you, and he won't eat properly."
Su Ran waves the male lead gong away. "We can chat later. My emperor and Zhao'er miss me."
She places her hand in the emperor's, and the two of them walk home hand in hand for dinner!
The male lead gong is so furious his mouth twists!
Theme: Keep striving to live even when you find yourself in adversity. Perhaps life will bloom in unexpected ways.
