“Remus, what lies between the moon and us?” Aliel Evans looked up at the sky.
“Stars, rivers, and countless passing seconds.” The boy sat cross-legged and raised his head along with the person beside him, but he couldn’t see the moon.
Only the heavy night sky and drifting clouds.
“No,” she said, shaking her head. In the dim glow of the night, she chuckled softly. Remus mistook her smile for moonlight.
“No,” she smiled. “Moonlight lies between the moon and us.”
“The moon can’t see us clearly, so it uses moonlight to find a path to the human world.”
Aliel loved the moon, and she loved the moonlight.
But she would clutch Remus’s hand and, her voice tense, chase away the full moon. She would also use clumsy spells to fill a room with silver light.
“Remus, I love you,” she said, her voice as light and airy as moonlight.
“I love you too.” Remus lowered his head to look at her. His slightly long hair half concealed the faint scar on his cheek, and his lake-green eyes brimmed with laughter. “I’ll love you as far as the moonlight reaches.”
“Where’s that?”
“Where a wolf can kiss the full moon.”
