"Hey, have you heard? The master of the Shen family in the north of the city is taking another wife!"
"Huh? The Shen family! Which Shen family?"
"Oh, come on. Which Shen family could it be in all of Bianjing? Marquis Shen Yanwu's family!"
"Heavens! The Marquis is nearly sixty and he's taking another wife? I wonder which young lady he's chosen."
"They say it's the eldest daughter of Minister Lu. I hear she's as pretty as a flower, and only sixteen this year."
"Oh, how pitiful!"
"Hey, have you heard? Yesterday, Young Marquis Shen went to see His Majesty and said he wanted to marry Lu Wan."
"Who? The same Lu Wan who was previously betrothed to the Shen family?"
"That's right!"
"Wait, wait, you've lost me. Isn't that incest?"
"Heavens, I can hardly believe it myself! Right by the imperial city, under the Son of Heaven's nose, something like this has happened, and he even asked the emperor for permission. Young Marquis Shen wants to marry his former stepmother!"
Lu Wan never imagined she would one day become the subject of people's gossip. Even less did she expect that in just five short years, she would go from a noble young lady everyone pitied to the Lu family's disgrace, a shameless woman who had violated the moral order...
