In the capital, there is a troupe called Fengxi, fond of performing tales of the jianghu.
Out in the jianghu, there is a troupe called Fengxi, whose plays every dignitary outside the capital has seen.
In the capital and the jianghu, it seems there are two different opera troupes. But the performers are the same, and so are the playwrights. Everyone says Du Jiuxi of the opera house has a masterful pen, able to conjure a turbulent, passionate tale in just a few strokes. But Du Jiu of the opera house only ever made a few small revisions to each play. The real playwright and lyricist was the troupe's resident scholar. Du Jiu, meanwhile, was the troupe's master in every sense of the word.
Du Jiu of the opera house was known as Young Master Du Jiu. Everyone knew his surname was Du and his given name was Jiuxi, but few knew his real name. It was a beautiful, vivid name, one that took a flower for its namesake.
Anyone who knew the true name of Du Jiu of the opera house also knew how deeply he valued loyalty and friendship, and how he could never bear to see those around him die tragically. If anyone so much as laid a finger on them, he would turn the world upside down in retaliation.
That day, an actor died at the opera house in the western part of the city, and a top scholar went mad in his mansion in the capital.
Master Du half-lowered his eyes and tapped his fingers.
When the drums and gongs of the Fengxi troupe began, the dead actor returned to the stage, and the mad scholar came to his senses. From the moment when all was joyful, old friends who knew one another would live through once more the ending already ordained for the dead. The crowd wept. When the performance ended, everyone was filled with righteous fury.
That very night, the entire household of the Ministry of War's Vice Minister, who had been connected to the dead actor, was wiped out.
Master Du waved his sleeves and departed the capital with his troupe, unhurried and composed.
The capital had seen the jianghu performed.
The first time,
In Yun'an City, a famous courtesan died of illness, and a failed scholar was once imprisoned for the woman he loved.
The second time,
In Yujing City, a young woman broke into a tower, where a young master had guarded it for ten years.
The third time,
It was Lu Qingcha, a woman of the jianghu who knew all its secrets, yet could not find the elder brother she had lost in childhood no matter how far she searched.
The fourth time,
It was a young man carrying a heavy sword, determined to make a name for himself. Clutching the dreams of his youth, he pressed forward step by step as the world laughed at him.
At last, at the peony banquet in Luoyang, Master Du, who had always performed other people's stories, suddenly revealed the hatred and grief that filled his heart. The dagger was finally bared: he was determined to win justice for the departed!
