A rabbit who gets riled up at the slightest touch vs. a sharp-tongued cat who never says anything nice
In her senior year of high school, Wen Yang moved into Phoenix Wutong Gardens. Two other people moved in with her: two people her dad had brought home from somewhere.
One expected her to call her Mom, the other expected her to call him Big Brother.
Wen Yang called neither of them that. Instead, she gave them a contact name: After My Inheritance.
·
But later, she realized that "After My Inheritance" didn't seem to be after her family's money at all.
He drove her to school, made her soup, dried her hair, and then patiently helped her clean up her messes.
Wen Yang pressed her lips together, thought it over, and changed his contact name to: Big Brother.
·
A year passed in a flash, and Wen Yang got into the best teacher-training university in the country. On the day she started school, she received a package. Inside was a pile of gleaming gold jewelry: earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, all worth a fortune.
She was stunned and took out her phone to message her big brother.
It was only when she saw the red exclamation mark that she realized he had blocked her ages ago.
·
At an alumni reunion six years later,
Wen Yang was a little tipsy. During dinner, she grabbed the man beside her, eager to show off her gold jewelry.
Caught up in the introductions, she couldn't help boasting with a smile: Jealous? My big brother gave me my dowry.
The man said nothing. Only after the young woman was dead drunk did he stroke her cheek and carefully gather her into his arms.
Half-asleep, Wen Yang heard him murmur in her ear:
You got it wrong. It wasn't a dowry. It was the bride price.
