Synopsis
College student Nanfeng transmigrates to ancient times after a car accident and becomes an unloved Crown Princess. Her true identity is an assassin trained by a neighboring kingdom. Just days after her coronation as empress, Emperor Song Junhuai discovers who she is and orders her execution.
After reading her own ending, Nanfeng shakes her head and runs away. But wherever she goes, Song Junhuai follows.
In the end, Nanfeng decides to give up and go with the flow, but Song Junhuai says, "I know you're not her, so I won't kill you. It's too dangerous outside. You'd better stay obediently by my side, and attend tomorrow's empress coronation ceremony while you're at it."
To avoid exposing her identity, Nanfeng has no choice but to act like the original owner's gentle and virtuous self. The Empress Dowager is very pleased with her new empress, unaware that Nanfeng is secretly plotting another escape, though Song Junhuai catches her at it again.
At first, Song Junhuai's childhood sweetheart, Consort Lin, provokes Nanfeng. "No matter what, His Majesty and I grew up together. Naturally, what we have is different from what you have."
Nanfeng smiles faintly and says, "Of course. Who could ever compare to you, little sister?"
Nanfeng cleverly uses her modern knowledge to resolve one harem crisis after another. She realizes that even if Song Junhuai doesn't kill her, her main quest is still to survive. Faced with the Empress Dowager's and the consorts' constant troublemaking, she is forced to get caught up in the conflict.
As the harem struggles grow more intense, Nanfeng is often targeted by the other consorts because Song Junhuai favors her so much. As an emperor, Song Junhuai announces to the world: [The only one I will love in this life is the Empress. Year after year, it will remain so. I will never betray her.]
On top of that, Song Junhuai lets Nanfeng do whatever she wants in the harem, acting as domineeringly as she pleases. As a result, Nanfeng earns the title of "enchantress who beguiles the ruler."
Watching Song Junhuai wash her feet, Nanfeng thinks that what they say... is right...
Later, a master manipulator arrives at the palace. She doesn't hurt anyone, but she is determined to sow discord between Nanfeng and Song Junhuai.
At a banquet, she carries over a plate of exquisite pastries and says sweetly to Song Junhuai, "I remember you saying these were your favorite pastries when you visited my palace last time. I made them myself. Would you like to try one, Your Majesty?"
Feeling Nanfeng's sharp gaze, Song Junhuai nearly stops breathing. Nanfeng, on the other hand, takes a tiny bite and immediately spits it out. Frowning, she says, "What is this disgusting thing? Consort Wan was trying to poison me? Confine her for a month, dock a month's allowance, and have her kneel outside her door at noon every day to recite sutras and pray for blessings."
Before she even finishes speaking, Consort Wan is already weeping like a pear blossom in the rain, casting a pitiful look at Song Junhuai. But before she can speak, Song Junhuai says coldly and sternly, "When did I say that everything in the harem is to be decided by the Empress, with no objections allowed?"
Nanfeng happily gives Song Junhuai a discreet thumbs-up and whispers, "You're the best, dear. You get a kiss as a reward."
[Song Junhuai has something to say]
"At first, she was like a little wildcat when I brought her home. After I spent time keeping her company and carefully looking after her with treats, she finally became like a house cat. Sometimes she's tsundere and ignores me, but when she's in a good mood, she'll roll over and show me her belly. I can pet her head, kiss her, hug her, and lift her up high!"
[Nanfeng replies from afar]
"After observing you for a while, I can trust you. But as my personal cat butler, you can't have any other cats! If you don't explain yourself today, I'm running away from home!"
Three seconds later, Song Junhuai appears at Huai'an Palace and carefully tries to reason with Nanfeng. "My lady, please calm down. I was meeting with ministers at the Hall of Mental Cultivation this afternoon. I didn't go to her palace. You have to believe me."
Nanfeng laughs in exasperation. "Who doesn't trust whom here? That imperial physician looked at me one time, and my dear husband had him killed?"
