When Gu Chaoyi was eight, he did something wrong that separated Tong Jialuan from her mother for ten whole years. He wants to make it up to her in every way he can.
But she says, "I don't need any of this. You should be a little kinder to yourself instead."
Gu Chaoyi and Tong Jialuan first met on a snowy night. He stepped out of a Mercedes in little leather shoes, on his way to a New Year's concert. Meanwhile, her family was hauling their bags as if fleeing disaster into a dilapidated factory building. Mud covered the ground, and her young face was red from the cold wind.
Tong Jialuan spent two whole years in a drafty, crumbling house before a terrible piece of news arrived: her mother was going to remarry, but the young master of that family refused to let her go with her mother.
"Why? Why won't he let me stay with you, Mom? Can't you choose not to marry him?"
"Your grandfather is sick, and I don't have the money to save him. But Uncle Gu does."
Maybe evil is just evil, with no answer to be found.
Gu Chaoyi personally cut off their chance to become a family.
Everyone says Gu Chaoyi is a good person, and everyone knows how good he is to her. But Tong Jialuan shuts them all out, wanting nothing to do with him.
In other people's eyes, she's cold, distant, and unfeeling.
Gu Chaoyi shakes his head. "None of you has the right to tell her to be kind to me."
Ten years of rarely seeing her mother brought her a stable home and a safe childhood. Tong Jialuan realizes she can forgive everything in the world except Gu Chaoyi. To keep from hurting each other, she has to work hard to avoid him.
Why is he everywhere she goes? She even moves abroad to avoid him, and he still shows up!
Tong Jialuan begs him: "Could you please stay away from me? I really hate you."
Gu Chaoyi: "It's New Year's Eve. I came to make dumplings for you."
The snow falls so heavily that night. This time, he's the one with nowhere to go. Her roommate tries to persuade her: "Can you really bear to watch that handsome Asian boy freeze to death outside?"
She can't... She only wants him to leave.
Tong Jialuan hates that she isn't a heart of stone that can't be warmed. She doesn't even know when it started, but seeing Gu Chaoyi smile makes her happy, too.
She doesn't know how to win him over, either, so she sends a ton of pet food to his veterinary clinic. "I bought it as part of a Double Eleven deal, but Xiao Jia can't eat a whole ton by herself."
After fifteen years, she finally stops hating him.
